Progressive Die Stamping of a Copper Alloy Lead Frame for the Medical Industry

General Stamping Company manufactured this plated copper leadframe for a customer in the electronic component industry for use within a medical application. Material specifications called for ASTM B465 qualified 1/2 Hard 194 Copper Alloy, chosen for its electrical conductivity, high tensile strength, solderability, and plateability properties. We pre-plated the material with a 5 micron matte nickel finish, in accordance with QQ-N-290 specifications. This was followed by selectively plating a .250" wide gold stripe on each side of the material, per MIL-G-45204C specifications.

Using our 30 ton high speed Bruderer press, production began by reel-to-reel progressive die stamping the pre-plated material with a blanking die. Secondary forming and chopping operations were used to create the complex part geometries, all to within the precise ± .0005" tolerances. The .006" x .750" x .8825" parts were then cut into strips and packaged in molded plastic trays for safe shipment to the customer. Quality control was of utmost importance for this project, we developed a SUI (Set-up inspection), in process batch control system which allowed us to verify all dimensional and material integrity throughout the manufacturing process.
